The Pope Drops By

The first visit ever to the White House, by a Pope, was during Pres. Jimmy Carter's tenure. This week the Pope will make his second visit, to unprecedented fanfare.

This will be the first time President Bush has ever met a visiting world leader, in person, at the airport. The crowd at the White House will be the largest ever, larger even than the crowd of 7,000 that welcomed Queen Elizabeth II last spring. Later that evening festivities and a high profile meal will be held in the Pope's honor.

But according to a correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter,

"I think it's nice they're going to meet. They have a lot of things to talk about. But the notion that the world operates by the big guys getting together and cutting a deal is wrong."

Sooo... n'kay. And alrighty.
