Once upon a time there was a young lad who traded his mother's cow for three magic beans, climbed a beanstalk, and stole a bunch of magic stuff from the giant who lived at the top. Unbeknownst to Jack, the bag he threw over his shoulder also contained an assortment of food stuffs, including a giant apple, which fell to the ground and was picked up by the local arborist, who ate the apple and planted the seeds.
Years later an apple from that tree's descendants was put up for sale at a market in north Georgia, where it was purchased by my wife. Her plan was to include it in my lunch, which she did on this very morning, Nov. 28, 2006.
It's a tad embarassing when you can't even close your teeth on an apple because it's so big. It took several passes and over half an hour of constant biting and chewing to finish the thing! I must admit to feeling some remorse afterwards, as the apple could have fed a small family of Somalians.
It sure was good though.
