I had a nice breakfast of a Donut and Apple Juice in Zachary's class room this morning, hob-nobbing with all the other kindergartners and their Dads. Zach gave me the grand tour of every nook and cranny in the classroom. I saw the sticks they have to pull when they're bad, the 5 or 6 Windows XP class computers (impressive!), the "reading center", the place where he puts his lunchbox and his bookbag, etc.
Last night he gave me a "reminder" he had made at school that day, to remind me about Donuts for Dad. He wanted me to put it beside my bed so I would see it as soon as I woke up, and remember that I had to go eat donuts with him. This morning he noticed that we both had the color red in our shirts, and off we went to the schoolhouse.
His school is nothing like the school I went to as a kid. As far as I could tell every child's Dad was there, and a couple of Moms. Many of the kids I went to school with didn't even know what a Dad was. And of course, when I was in kindergarten all we learned was how to tie our shoes. Every day Zach has a Spanish lesson, science, reading (he's learning to write and read in kindergarten!), and at some point will do some Math.
All of the little boys seemed to inately sense that when Dad was around, it was playtime! After about 15 minutes I was beginning to get concerned that I might have to discipline Zack. He was going wild, running around the classroom, playing tug-of-war with the other little boys. At one point he started wrestling with another little boy, and the teacher leaned over and dragon-whispered, "Hey, do we do that in here?" Zach grinned and looked at me, and I gave him a nasty look and whispered a reprimand which didn't seem to work. I need to have a word with him tonight, the little booger.
On his desk when I arrived were some surprises for me, one of them a fill-in-the-blank description of his Dad. According to Zach, I am 67 feet tall, weigh 58 lbs, and if I were an animal I would be a lion. I don't like chicken (where did he get that?), and his favorite thing is "when we race". Everything was in his hand-writing.
Life is good.
